According to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), sickness absence is rising amongst UK employees.

During the recession, only 2.1% of UK employees surveyed by the ONS had taken at least one day off sick in the week before they were interviewed. However, this has now risen to 2.5%.

The latest figures also reveal that between October and December of last year, two million working days were lost as a result of absence, with an average of 613,000 employees off sick every week.

In an article  published on hrmagazine.co.uk last week, Marc Clavereau, Managing Director of Bodet, urged UK employers to accurately monitor and record staff attendance and absence.

As part of its welfare reforms, the UK government has announced an independent review into workplace sickness absence.

Led by Dame Carol Black, the Government's National Director for Health and Work, and David Frost, Director-General of the British Chambers of Commerce, the review will consider whether more people suffering from ill health could still work in some capacity.

The review will also examine how small businesses deal with the issue of sickness absence and look at ways to help businesses manage absence more effectively.

Last Monday, February 7th, was National Sickie Day: the day of the year on which businesses traditionally face the most absenteeism. However, with many employees worried about job security in the current economic climate, the level of absenteeism was thought to have been lower than in previous years.

The first Monday in February is known as National Sickie Day as that’s when there has traditionally been a peak in illness-related absences. Last year, an estimated 350,000 employees were off sick, at a cost to the economy of around £30 million.

However, speaking to HR Magazine prior to this year’s National Sickie Day, John Hayes, an employment partner at Irwin Mitchell, said that as a result of the fragile economy and the jobs market, he expected to see: “fewer people taking time off sick so early on in the year."

According to FirstCare , businesses lost as much as £181 million a week in the first week of January as a result of absence.
