UK employers have been warned that employees may take unwarranted sickness absences during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

An extra bank holiday has been added to the calendar on Tuesday 5 June, in order to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. However,  employees do not have the automatic right to take the day off and, in many cases, it will be up to employers to decide whether or not to grant staff the day off.

According to an article on the Personnel Today website, if employers do expect their staff to come into work on June 5th, they may experience a number of unauthorised staff absences, as a result of employees deciding to take the day off anyway by calling in sick when they are not really ill.

Employers have been encouraged to deter staff from taking unwarranted sickness absences during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, by making it clear that employees who call in sick may be subject to disciplinary action unless they can prove that their sickness was genuine.

An effective way to deter staff from taking unwarranted sick days is to use LeaveMaster in conjunction with the Bradford Factor in your organisation.

More than 130 million working days were lost to sickness absence in the UK last year, a report has revealed.

Issued by the Office for National Statistics, the report also reveals that employees in London had the lowest percentage of hours lost to sickness in 2011 while workers in the North East and Wales had the highest percentage of lost hours, and that the percentage of hours lost to sickness absence was lower in the private sector than in the public sector.

By implementing LeaveMaster in your organisation, you can deter staff from taking unwarranted sick days and reduce your absenteeism rates.

According to a YouGov survey more than a fifth of UK employees will take unauthorised time off during the 2012 Olympic Games.

More than 2,000 people were surveyed for the poll. 21% of the surveyed employees admitted that they were willing to take unauthorised absence from work in order to watch high profile events during the Games.

The survey also found that only 22% of workers believe their organisation is prepared for the disruption likely to be caused by the forthcoming Olympics and only 9% of employees have received information about flexible working policies during the Games.

By using LeaveMaster in conjunction with the Bradford Factor, you can identify employees whose unauthorised absences are disrupting and costing your business.

A research study has revealed a connection between New Year’s health and fitness resolutions and increases in staff absence.

The study found that when employees make a New Year’s resolution to exercise more or play more sport they often set themselves over-ambitious exercise plans and end up having to take time off work to recover from fitness-related injuries.

The study also found that DIY and gardening injuries are additionally a common cause of staff absence.

The most efficient and effective way to manage all forms of employee absence is to implement a powerful leave and absence management solution such as LeaveMaster.
