The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) has advised employers that they may be hit with an influx of holiday requests in the run up to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

According to research conducted by the CIPP, nearly one in six UK employees are planning to book leave in order to watch events during the Olympic Games.

With a large number of employees looking to take time off, the CIPP has warned employers that they may face administrative difficulties trying to process a large volume of holiday requests at the same time and need to make sure they are prepared in advance.

The payroll body has also advised employers that they need to be ready to deal with competing requests for time off and should have a policy in place for staff who want to work irregular hours during the Olympic period.

According to a new study, private businesses in the UK lose around £3.1 billion each year as a result of long-term sick leave.

This rises to around £6.5 billion when public sector organisations are included in the figures.

The study was conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research and has also revealed that organisations with more than 500 employees lose an estimated £620,000 per annum because of long-term sickness absence.

Following a new European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling , employees who are ill or injured during a period of annual leave now have the right to re-take their leave a later date, irrespective of when they became sick.

Prior to the ruling, workers who fell ill, or who were injured, while on annual leave were permitted to turn their holiday into sick leave and re-take their annual leave at an alternative date.

Under the new ruling, employees who were already ill or injured before taking annual leave are now also able to re-take the leave at a later date, if their illness or injury continues into the annual leave period.

The UK Government is planning to amend the Working Time Regulations 1998 to incorporate the new ECJ ruling.
